What part of money management gives you the most trouble? Your spending, saving, investing, generosity or finding your wallet? If your response is saving, you’re in luck because on this edition of MoneyWise Live, Rob West and Steve Moore discuss what keeps people from saving money.
Is saving a biblical principle?
We see the idea of saving affirmed in many places in Scripture as in Proverbs 6:6--8 "Go to the ant you sluggard: consider its ways and be wise! It has no commander, no overseer or ruler, yet it stores its provisions in summer and gathers it food at harvest..." and in Proverbs 13:11 "Wealth gained hastily will dwindle, but whoever gathers little by little will increase it." The idea here is that it's wise to save but we should also check out hearts to ensure that we don't trust in our savings. This is not a replacement for ultimate trust in God as our source and provider.
Why do we hear from so many people who have trouble saving money?
There are plenty of people whose income is far lower than their outgo but most of the people we hear from make enough money to save, but self-discipline is the main issue. It comes down to living within your means.
It’s critical to understand that it pleases God to have this area of your life in balance. Christians are supposed to be able to take care of their families and come to the aid of others in the church from time to time who may have needs. Kinda hard to do that if you have no savings.
Remember everything you have belongs to God, not just what you put in the offering plate. What we have comes from him and belongs to Him… we're supposed to be qualified managers who handle it well and find God’s plan and balance for our own lives.
