Starting Over Financially (Widows)

Show Notes

According to the Census Bureau, four out of five women will outlive their husbands. Losing one’s spouse is hard enough, but it’s especially tough if a widow has little or no experience handling the family finances. On this edition of MoneyWise, Rob West and Steve Moore welcome Miriam Neff and her daughter Valerie Neff Hogan or WidowConnection.com. Together they bring a wealth of spiritual and financial advice for widows.

Next, Rob and Steve take you calls at (800) 525-7000 or Questions@MoneyWise.org about the following:

  • If, when buying a used car, the dealer financed the car but for a very high interest rate – even when you have a good FICO score, is it possible to refinance a car loan through a different lender and, if so, how do you do that?
  • If you're on Social Security Disability, have gotten into bad financial trouble with all your credit cards maxed outand you're considering entering a debt management program, how do you know which program is the right one?

At the end of the program, Steve mentioned The Sound Mind Investing Handbook by Austin Pryor.  You can find it on this website (MoneyWise.org).  You can also connect with a MoneyWise Coach or access our other books and many free helpful resources.  If you’re active on social media, you can find us on Facebook (MoneyWise Media) and join the conversation.
